After 1.5 years of successful continuous operation at the Fuji wastewater treatment plant in Japan, the HTC plant jointly developed by TerraNova Energy GmbH and Kobelco Eco-Solutions CO., LTD. has been selected by the Japan Sewage Works Agency (JS) as a “JS New Technology.”
Particular confirmation was given to the energy efficiency of the process as well as the suitability of the hydrochar produced as an energy source, in accordance with the requirements of the JIS Z7312 standard for sewage-sludge-based fuels.
JS highlighted as advantageous that the process-engineering coupling with sludge digestion resulted in an overall negative CO₂ emission for the total process up to combustion. The energy input required for production was exceeded by the energy content of the hydrochar produced.
Within a technology partnership, Kobelco Eco-Solutions CO., LTD. and TerraNova Energy GmbH jointly planned the demonstration project, which went into operation in December 2023 at the Seibu Water Reclamation Center in Fuji City.
The Japan Sewage Works Agency (JS) is a joint local government corporation. It plans and constructs wastewater facilities on behalf of municipalities and prefectures. Its technical standards function as the de facto standard for the design and construction of wastewater facilities in Japan.
The purpose of the “JS New Tech Implementation Program” is to actively incorporate superior new technologies into JS-contracted construction projects. A “JS New Technology” is defined as a technology not yet established within JS that meets certain performance or implementation criteria. Since 2011, 50 technologies have been selected under it.
